Just a Quick Note

24th August 2021

The e-newsletter of the Twmbarlwm Society

Hello Folks

I hope you’ve all survived the school holidays – but if you want one last thing to get the kids involved with you could consider Twmbarlwm this coming Sunday for a spot of litter picking – or just for a great walk and a look at the fantastic views.

Last month was a great turn out of helpers due to the lovely weather on the day – so if it’s as good this weekend we look forward to seeing the old faces up there – and hopefully some new faces – for a good pre-autumn clean.

The Last-Sunday-Of-The-Month Litter Pick will go ahead this weekend – Sunday 29th August 2021

Please make your own way there and we will meet you at the car park below the Twmp at 10:30 am.

We are usually there for a couple of hours and we collect litter from the area immediately around the car park and some of us walk around the wider area to check out fences, paths etc. and effect any repairs if we are able. Tools, Pickers, Bags and Gloves will be supplied.

This is also a great opportunity to meet other members and learn more about the area and the work that the Society gets involved with.

Please make your own way to the car park at the end of Mountain Road, below the Twmp. We will provide tea and bikkies to all helpers after the pick and there will be soft drinks on offer too – or bring your own picnic if you need to.

Don’t forget – if you are taking a walk up there any day of the week for exercise, why not think about taking a rubbish bag with you to collect any littesr on your way – every little helps. If you do leave any filled bags in the corner of the car park, make sure to let us know so that we can inform the council to collect it.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL NEWS

As you may know from previous newsletters – we had our archaeological dig on the mountain from 2nd to the 20th August. We examined three major trenches plus a few exploratory ones with a mixture of results.

We didn’t find any amazing artefacts (but we were hardly expecting to anyway) but we have confirmed certain theories and answered some questions – more importantly the archaeologists and Cadw are sufficiently interested to warrant further research and they are very likely to support our application for more digging next year.

The archaeologists have sent samples away to be tested and accurately dated – the results will probably take a couple of months to come through and when available we will publish a full report online.

There was a reasonable response for volunteers and we had 5 or 6 join us most days – and there was a great deal of interest from passers-by. A party of local councillors visited the site and were given a guided tour by the Cadw staff on site and a group of nearly 30 people from the Fusion Network paid us a visit too.

I have put plenty of photos on our website in the Archaeology/Blog and I’m still catching up on the words – but rest assured, we will publish a complete description of the investigation in due course.

Visit our website http://www.twmbarlwm.co.uk and the archaeology blog to see reports and photos of how far we got when this project started in 2019.

Please be sensible and follow the government’s advice during this pandemic emergency – keep safe and healthy and help us all protect the NHS

Many Regards
