Just a Quick Note

The e-newsletter of the Twmbarlwm Society
23rd September 2020

Hello Folks

In my last e-newsletter I said “At long last things seem to be easing with quarantine restrictions…” – how wrong I was – within a week we were in lockdown again – feeling frustrated is a bit of an understatement.

ARCHAEOLOGY

I also told you in the last email that our archaeology project would be re-starting towards the end of this month. However, on the day that Caerphilly Borough was put into lockdown we had a ZOOM meeting with Cadw and the archaeological contractors and I’m afraid that it was agreed to postpone the project yet again.

Even if restrictions were lifted tomorrow it would not be possible for the contractors to organise their dig team and we will soon be in the winter months that are not conducive for digging on an exposed hill top such as Twmbarlwm. We therefore decided to postpone the dig until next spring and we will meet after Christmas to review the situation.

If the restrictions are lifted soon then the geophys team may be able to do their part of the survey – but whether volunteers will be required will depend on the official guidelines in force at the time. In fact winter suits geophys work better as the undergrowth dies back somewhat – and remember, we must complete the geophys survey in order to target the areas for the proposed investigative trenches.

Again we can only promise to keep in touch with the archaeological teams and let you know when and if the work re-starts.

LITTER PICK

This coming Sunday, 27th September, we will be organising our usual monthly litter pick on Twmbarlwm.

Anyone is welcome to join us (as long as you are from within Caerphilly County Borough) to help with the litter pick around the car park and common but note that we will not be providing hot drinks afterwards as usual, so please bring your own if required. If you have your own gloves and equipment so much the better.

We will be at the car park at 10:30 and we generally stay there for 2-3 hours

Everyone must observe social distancing for this activity so I’m afraid we won’t be able to offer any lifts up the mountain as usual. You should only work alongside people within your own “family bubble”.

We have pick-up sticks and rubbish bags and have hand sanitiser and wipes available – it is each person’s own responsibility to take necessary precautions such as wiping down any shared equipment before and after use.

Please be sensible and follow the government’s advice during this pandemic emergency – keep safe and healthy and help us all protect the NHS

Many Regards
